The conference "Thomas More: Man of Letters," was held at the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In the photograph below, Richard J. Schoeck, Professor Emeritus of Humanities at the University of Colorado, presents the opening lecture, "Utopia and the Annus Mirabilis 1516".

Dr. Schoeck studied at Princeton University, where he earned an M.A and a Ph.D. His teaching career included Cornell, Notre Dame, Toronto, Washington, Colorado, and the University of Trier. A visiting lecturer or scholar at Yale, Princeton, Dallas and Oxford, he presently is an adjunct Professor of English at the University of Kansas. His publications include books on Sir Thomas More and a two volume biography of Erasmus. In addition, he has written the following collections of poetry: A Raging against Chaos (London, 1989), The Eye of a Traveller (Mellon Poetry Press, 1992).
